On the blog now:

In the first flush of her California victory, it seemed Clinton had a clear path to the nomination. But the picture looks different on closer examination a day later.

While she was winning the dwellings of America's elite, Obama was sweeping everyplace else - Utah, Idaho, Minnesota, Illinois, North Dakota, Kansas and Colorado, many of them states with virtually no black population. And his success in Missouri, Alabama and Georgia show that he continues to dominate Southern states with their large minority populations.

Why is Clinton doing so poorly in the heartland? There, away from the liberal media and establishment bias and from the coastal immigrant and Latino concentrations, she seems at a loss. Aside from her core white-women constituency, these voters are really supporting the memory of Bill's presidency more than the prospect of a Hillary administration.

Hillary Clinton Again Lies about Iraq

Yet suddenly, in January 1998, the Clinton administration decided that it had become an intolerable violation of UN Security Council resolution 687, which called upon Iraq to verify its disarmament, and warned Iraq that the United States - despite the lack of Security Council approval as required - would engage in a sustained bombing campaign against their country if the Iraqis did not allow these inspections of presidential palaces to go ahead. By February, a large-scale U.S. military assault seemed likely. However, United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan was able to broker a deal late that month that opened the presidential palaces to UN inspectors, but with an additional diplomatic presence in recognition of the sites' special status.

The disappointment by Clinton administration officials that the bombing campaign would not be able to go ahead as planned was palpable.

Humanitarian Aid and Nation Building: Can Outsiders Really Help?

All of these are life saving activities.

The second obligation is governance and capacity building. We need to assist governments at all levels to develop transparent and accountable governments, promote rule of law, and develop civil society. This is not the same as elections. I would not suggest that elections are an immediate requirement in a nation-building exercise. They should come later, but rule of law is a critical element in governance and capacity building.

The third obligation is disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration, and that's an activity that the military has to do. If you look at Haiti and at the current events in Iraq, the military is very reluctant to engage in the disarmament of populations. It is not really what they do.

Happy Friday: News About Economy Just Gets Worse

Friday's reports were just the latest in a string of worrisome news about the growing threat of recession and inflation.

"Over the last three to four weeks, there have been a string of economic releases that were dramatically weaker than expected," said John Canavan, a market analyst at Stone and McCarthy Associates. "The implications are quite negative for the economy."

The only bright spot: futures traders are now speculating that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates by three-quarters of a point at its March 18 meeting instead of the half point that was expected previously.

Is Bush Stopped in His Tracks on Iran?

Bush and Cheney do not need a rational excuse for invading another country. Why are we in Iraq? Again, why are we in Iraq? More pertinent is: Will Halliburton and other private contractors make big money by invading Iran. Will invading Iran give the oil companies more control over Iranian oil or shipping routes? It's that simple. Blood for oil and money. Congress cannot stop Bush. No more than Hitler could have been stopped. The neo-cons and Israel (with its own little concentration camp of 1.4 million) are out of control. Ironic isn't it?

Fancy a sickie? See your chemist

It's amazing how many sickies are attached to weekends and public holidays.I was brought up, that you always went to work even if sick, then went home if it got worse. Often, it just got better as my body exercised. NO sickies on Gallipoli, or at Tobruk, or along the Kokoda Trail, or in Vietnam - unless you were totally incapacitated !Back then, BLUDGER was the worst insult you could call a bloke, now it's become a comical byword.

It all sounds a very good idea on paper, but human nature being what it is I feel (know) that it will be abused by a proportion of the public and also chemists.
