Ray Harryhausen's monster gift to film

When one works at a special effects house, even the giant space bugs can become routine. Industrial Light & Magic in the Presidio is filled with relics from two generations worth of science fiction and fantasy films - model spaceships and dinosaurs and dozens of movie posters - that begin to fade into the background on the second or third visit.

But there's one piece of art on the wall that few in the building take for granted: A giant print of the Cyclops from "The 7th Voyage of Sinbad," with a signature scrawled on it once for every visit by the monster's creator. It was displayed prominently in the lobby of the old ILM offices in San Rafael, and now gets a place of honor near the cast photos from each of the company's productions.

"Every time I walk by that and see those signatures, I think, 'This has got to be the coolest place in the world,' " says Tim Harrington, an animator in his mid-30s who is working on the new Indiana Jones movie.

Clinton campaign starts 5-point attack on Obama

Surely a man of any integrity would not participate in such a spectacle. Obama is either out-of-the-loop, shallower than we dare imagine, or far sinister than he lets on. Is this our concern? No. Our concern as voters, is our vote. With our vote lies our own responsibility towards this nation, and its citizens.

First National Bank of Vandalia Chooses Meridian In-House

PADUCAH, Ky., Nov. 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The First National Bank, Vandalia, Illinois, has signed a contract to begin using McCoy Myers & Associates' Meridian in-house banking solution. McCoy Myers & Associates (McM) is a subsidiary of Computer Services, Inc. (CSI) (OTC Pink Sheets: CSVI).

The First National Bank (FNB), located just east of St. Louis, Missouri, has been in operation since 1865, making it one of the oldest banks in the country. A long and strong history of growth and an advocate of in-house banking systems continue to describe the bank. In fact, its continued growth is what led FNB to look for a solution that would totally integrate all the bank's products and services. According to Ernie Chappel, President and CEO of FNB, "We were ready for a system that would take us to the next level."

FNB was one of the first ten imaging customers of Summit Financial Solutions, another subsidiary of CSI.

Music Preview: Jon Anderson says Yes to the School of Rock

They are Paul Green School of Rock All-Stars, as seen in the documentary "Rock School." With guidance from the Philadelphia-based Green, an avid classic-rock fan, the kids became fans of Yes' style of progressive rock and invited Anderson to perform on the soundtrack for the film.

The next step was a tour, for which he happily obliged. The band is playing a set that includes about 10 Yes songs, including the challenging, nearly 20-minute-long suite "Close to the Edge" from 1972.

Recession, mes-mession

Among the bad news, hype and hostile opinion in the March 2 edition of your paper, one article stood out to me as positive: "Getting set to map North County" by SDNEDC (San Diego North Economic Development Council) CEO Gary Knight. The concept of mapping assets of North County instead of cataloguing "concerns" is an outstanding change of pace and should be applauded strongly.Recent studies, as revealed in the book "Strength Finder," indicate that success comes much easier when people and organizations focus on core strengths rather than striving to correct weaknesses. Would this be true for our region also? How would we know without a map of our assets?Nothing happens in government or at home until someone makes the sale. Economic strength is the only source of the funds for all the concerns expressed ad nauseam in the press.

Britney's Over, Here Comes Alicia vs. Celine

In a word, they despise her. Jackson is so isolated, they claim, that he has no idea the amount of enmity she's caused.

Michael Jackson's fans, like those of Madonna, Mariah Carey and other pop stars, are his bread and butter. Fans clubs, which sound like something out of the 1940s, are often what keep careers going long after mass popularity has subsided.

For Jackson, his loyal, zealous fans have always been a source of comfort. Perhaps he's wondering now why he's so cut off from them.

One fan from Denmark wrote an e-mail, since purged from a Jackson Web site, describing Bain's reaction to fan interaction. The fan claimed that Bain responded to news of a big gift being sent to Jackson this way: "Michael is not interested in receiving any fan mail or fan gifts.
